OVERVIEW
Introduced in 1978, the BMW M1 Procar was a special racing version of the iconic M1, developed to compete in the Procar Championship. This series was created to support Formula One races, featuring some of the best drivers from F1 and other racing disciplines. The M1 Procar was a collaboration between BMW Motorsport and Lamborghini, with the final design penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The car’s aggressive, wedge-shaped body and mid-engine layout were revolutionary for its time.
The M1 Procar was powered by a 3.5-litre inline-six engine, producing around 470 bhp, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 190 mph. The car featured a lightweight tubular steel space frame and a fiberglass body, ensuring optimal performance on the track. The M1 Procar’s racing pedigree and limited production make it one of the most coveted BMW models among collectors and enthusiasts.
HISTORY
This M1 Procar is one of the Osella built cars, finished by BMW on May 9th, 1979. This particular car was purchased by Vasek Polak to be campaigned the following year. They took the car to the Riverside raceway for some break-in laps then back to their shop. Shortly thereafter, the FIA rules changed, and the car was no longer eligible to race. The car was put in storage until the prior owner purchased it in 1989. The car has been continuously maintained and kept in pristine mechanical and cosmetic condition. It’s believed to be the only "new" M1 pro car in existence.
In 2021 this car was acquired by the current owner.
TECHNICAL/CONDITION STATUS
A recent service was completed by The Werkshop in March of 2022, with limited mileage added since then. The car has been used sparingly at private track days since its acquisition.
